Benefits

Who is Leading the Virtual Community?

That’s me giving a talk in downtown Chicago!

Rocio’s Background

  • Entrepreneur, freelancer, speaker, mentor, wife, and mom
  • Cybersecurity, GDPR specialist, and tech start-up background

I got my start with cybersecurity at a young FinTech in Chicago. At the time, I was a product manager that took on security audit work. I loved the idea of being involved with cybersecurity. I learned on the job, with lots of direction from my colleagues and managers. When I started, I was eager to learn. That usually involved doing lots of reading, running Google searches, asking questions, making mistakes, and being open to trying different techniques to see what worked and what didn’t work. I then joined a local consulting firm, where I had the privilege of helping other organizations with data security. Along the way, I realized that organizations had similar problems, just different parameters that I had to work with. It frustrated me to see that organizations were struggling with getting started with data security, and their only options were to hire a full-time security person (good luck with finding someone and keeping them) or hire a consultant (with usually high rates). This frustration turned into concern, after getting involved with the consumer impact side of the equation.

When I got started, I found myself feeling very lost and frustrated. I actually almost exited the cybersecurity space, because I felt that it just wasn’t for me. And then, I get lucky and come across an awesome mentor! She took me under her wing, helped me explore the different options in cybersecurity, guided me, and supported me along the way. Since then, I have been intentional with surrounding myself with supporting people that want to do good work and help others. I overcame challenges by asking questions, leaning on my colleagues and mentors for guidance, and learning from my mistakes. Now, as a freelancer, I have the opportunity to take on projects with organizations that can use my help. That has opened up the doors for me to also build this virtual community where I can help other professionals with their journey with cybersecurity. GDPR is the latest bar in the industry, and I want to do my part in helping other professionals figure this out and explore the field to see if this something they want to dive deeper on.

FAQ’s

The internet holds lots of information about GDPR. Why should I pay for information that I can probably find with a few Google searches?

You’re right, there’s plenty of information on GDPR available on the internet. However, it’s all scattered and depending on your size, industry, and company culture, you will need to go to multiple places to figure out what applies to you. Once you have found what you’re looking for, you will then need to figure out how to implement it. Talking from experience, this is actually the challenging part!

Our community organizes the information and walks you thru the steps that you need to follow to successfully implement a GDPR program for your company. Click here to see the list of courses available and the lineup of courses coming up.

I am not looking to become a GDPR professional. It sounds like the membership will create “more work” for me…

We’ve build (and re-built) information security programs for lots of companies. Startups, medium-sized companies, and established enterprises. Over that journey, we have realized that there is a repeatable process that ALL companies follow when starting to implement a compliance program, like GDPR. We believe that with guidance, most professionals can build a foundational security program. The same way that professionals are expected to manage projects at some capacity, we believe that our lean approach allows most professionals to develop a GDPR program for their organizations. It boils down to having a couple of skills. If you, or someone in your team has this skillset, the GDPR Stand Up Community Membership is a good fit. Those skills are:

  • High-level understanding of the business and how it operates.
  • Effective communicator. This is key for assembling the necessary documents and sharing that with team-members for feedback and signoff.
  • Basic documentation skills. This is key for creating the basic record-keeping that will serve as evidence that you are following your GDPR program.

Our company is starting from scratch. How long will it take us to reach GDPR compliance?

You are in complete control of this timeline! Our program is designed to be self-paced. Just remember that GDPR requires one-time activities and ongoing activities. See this more as a journey that the GDPR Stand Up Community Membership can guide you through.

What tools should I expect to need here?

A word processor and a spreadsheet solution will be enough. We love to use Google Drive. We believe in using the tools at our disposal. At a later-point, you want want to use different tools, go for it. But for now, and really for that first year, a word processor and a spreadsheet solution is all you will need.
